What is EcoRoll toilet paper made from?
EcoRoll is made of 100% FSC® Certified bamboo pulp harvested in China. Bamboo is one of the world’s fastest growing plants, capable of growing up to three feet in 24 hours. It requires little water, no fertiliser and self regenerates. The more regularly bamboo is harvested, the faster it grows.
Is EcoRoll hypoallergenic?
EcoRoll is designed to be soft and suitable for people with sensitive skin. While there is no formal standard that defines a toilet paper as “hypoallergenic”, we take a considered approach to materials and manufacturing. As with any personal care product, individual sensitivities can vary.
EcoRoll is bleached using a Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) process, which uses hydrogen peroxide instead of chlorine-based chemicals. This method avoids the use of elemental chlorine or chlorine dioxide and is widely recognised as a more environmentally preferable bleaching process.
Is your toilet paper PFAS-free?
EcoRoll bamboo toilet paper has been independently tested by Société Générale de Surveillance SA (SGS) for total fluorine as a screening method for PFAS.
No PFAS were detected, with results below the laboratory method detection limit of 20 mg/kg.
Is your toilet paper toxin-free?
EcoRoll toilet paper is independently tested by Société Générale de Surveillance SA (SGS) in line with the requirements of the Toxics in Packaging Clearinghouse (TPCH) Model Legislation.
The TPCH framework screens packaging materials for toxic substances that pose risks to human health and the environment, including lead, cadmium, mercury, and chromium.
In 2021, the TPCH updated its Model Legislation to:
- Expand the list of regulated chemicals to include (ortho) phthalates and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)
- Introduce new criteria for identifying and regulating additional chemicals of concern in packaging
- Update the definition of post-consumer recycled material
EcoRoll’s most recent TPCH-aligned test report was issued in 2023.
Independent laboratory testing by SGS confirms that the regulated substances screened under this framework were not detected or were below applicable regulatory thresholds.
How do you make your toilet paper white?
EcoRoll toilet paper is produced using a totally chlorine-free (TCF) process.
This means no elemental chlorine or chlorine-based compounds are used during manufacturing. Instead, the whitening process relies on alternative, non-chlorine methods to achieve a clean, white finish without the use of traditional chlorine bleaching.
Avoiding chlorine-based bleaching helps reduce the formation of harmful chlorinated by-products commonly associated with conventional paper processing.
Is your toilet paper vegan?
Yes. EcoRoll toilet paper is made without animal-derived ingredients.
Based on information provided by our manufacturer, no animal-based additives (such as gelatin or animal-derived fatty acids) are used in the production of EcoRoll toilet paper.
Some conventional paper products may use animal-derived binding agents or processing aids, which is why we choose to confirm ingredient inputs with our suppliers.
It’s worth noting that unlike food products, non-food items such as toilet paper are not required to carry standardised ingredient labelling. For this reason, consumers often need to rely on supplier disclosures rather than on-pack claims.
Why do you individually wrap your toilet paper?
EcoRoll toilet paper is individually wrapped to protect each roll during storage, handling, and transport. Individual wrapping helps:
- Keep rolls clean and hygienic before use
- Protect the paper from moisture exposure during shipping and warehousing
The wrapping itself is made from virgin paper pulp and printed using soy-based inks. We do not use plastic wrap. This approach allows us to protect the product while avoiding unnecessary plastic packaging.
Is your toilet paper septic tank safe?
EcoRoll bamboo toilet paper is designed to be soft and strong in use, while breaking down efficiently after flushing.
It is suitable for use in septic tanks and alternative toilet systems, including composting toilets, when used as intended. Like all toilet paper, performance will depend on system design, usage volume, and maintenance, but EcoRoll is made to disperse well in water rather than remain intact.
Materials and sustainability
Where is EcoRoll made?
EcoRoll is manufactured in China, where bamboo grows naturally and can be sourced at scale from FSC®-certified, responsibly managed forests.
Manufacturing within proximity to the raw material allows us to avoid the environmental cost of transporting fibre long distances.
We measure and offset shipping emissions as part of our Toitū Climate Positive programme, which requires us to measure our emissions annually and reduce them over time, with offsets used for emissions we cannot yet eliminate.
Where does your bamboo come from?
EcoRoll’s bamboo is sourced from FSC®-certified plantations in China, where bamboo grows quickly and can be responsibly managed at scale.
Our bamboo comes from FSC®-certified supply chains, which means the forests are managed to protect biodiversity, respect workers’ rights, and meet strict environmental and social standards set by the Forest Stewardship Council®.
China is the world’s largest producer of bamboo, with long-established expertise in bamboo cultivation and processing. Sourcing from this region allows us to access consistent quality while ensuring responsible forest management through independent FSC® certification.
Are Panda Bear inhabitants impacted by bamboo toilet paper production?
Short answer: no.
The bamboo used to manufacture EcoRoll toilet paper is not a food source for giant pandas.
Pandas rely on specific species of bamboo that grow naturally in mountainous regions of China, largely within protected panda reserves. The bamboo used for commercial products like toilet paper is a different species, grown on managed plantations specifically for industrial use.
These plantations are cultivated away from panda habitats and are regulated through responsible forestry practices, including FSC® certification, which helps ensure biodiversity protection and responsible land management.
As a result, bamboo toilet paper production does not compete with panda food sources or habitats, and does not contribute to panda endangerment.
What does FSC® mean?
The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) is a globally recognised, independent non-profit organisation that sets standards for responsibly managing Forests and Forest Products. FSC® certifications are internationally recognised as the most rigorous environmental and social standard for responsible forest management.
FSC® certification tracks materials through the supply chain—from forest to finished product—helping ensure that wood, paper, and bamboo products are sourced from responsibly managed forests that protect biodiversity, respect workers’ rights, and meet strict environmental and social criteria. FSC® forest management standards expand protection of water quality, prohibit harvesting rare old-growth forests and prevent loss of natural forest cover.
EcoRoll is made from 100% (FSC®) certified bamboo (FSC-C142978) ← That I.D. is our chain of custody certification. The boxes our toilet rolls are shipped in are also FSC® certified.
Why is bamboo toilet paper better than tree toilet paper?
Bamboo is an incredible renewable resource. Depending on the species, bamboo can be harvested in one to five years, compared to approximately 30-40 years for hardwood trees. According to The Forestry Corporation of New Zealand, the harvest age for the following trees (typically used to manufacture toilet paper) is as follows: Pinus radiata 29.1 years, Douglas-fir 40 years and Eucalyptus 21 years. When bamboo is harvested, it grows a new shoot from its root system, with no need for additional planting or cultivation.
It requires no chemicals, pesticides or fertiliser to grow and thrive - its own fallen leaves provide the necessary nutrients. Every part of the bamboo plant can be utilised to make a wide variety of products, meaning minimal waste.
Why don’t you use recycled paper for EcoRoll?
Using recycled paper can reduce pressure on forests and is an improvement over virgin fibre—at least for the environment, typically requires less water and energy. For many paper products, this is an important environmental benefit.
However, recycled toilet paper can also contain trace levels of certain chemicals, such as bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol S (BPS). These substances can enter recycled paper streams through materials like thermal paper receipts, where BPA or BPS is commonly used as a colour-developing agent.
While studies indicate that BPA and BPS levels in recycled paper products are generally within regulatory safety limits, we choose to avoid these substances where possible—particularly in products designed for direct and frequent skin contact.
For this reason, EcoRoll is made from FSC®-certified bamboo fibre, rather than recycled paper, and is screened for PFAS and other chemicals of concern through independent laboratory testing.
What does climate positive mean?
EcoRoll operates as part of Ecoware, a Toitū Climate Positive certified organisation. This means our greenhouse gas emissions are measured across the value chain in accordance with ISO 14064-1 and aligned with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Standard.
We are committed to credible, science-based targets, with a focus on measuring and reducing emissions first, rather than relying solely on offsetting.
Our carbon data is used to inform and drive emissions reduction initiatives across the business, including improvements to logistics efficiency, reductions in energy use, and changes to travel and fuel consumption. Progress against these initiatives is tracked through our sustainability action plan and internal reporting, which is reviewed annually as part of maintaining our Climate Positive certification.
What about the wrapper and inner cardboard core?
The inner core and outer wrapper are both made from paper.
At present, these components are designed for recycling and can be recycled through kerbside paper recycling where local systems accept them.
The wrappers are printed using soy-based inks, which are widely used in paper packaging and avoid heavy-metal inks.
We continue to review certification pathways for individual components, but we communicate end-of-life options based on current, verified acceptance, rather than future intent.
