Why our toilet paper is 100% FSC® certified bamboo
EcoRoll is made from FSC® certified bamboo (FSC-C142978), and you might be aware, but if you are not, FSC® is the Forest Stewardship Council, the highest level of forestry management certification in the world.
What is FSC®
FSC® is a non-profit organisation that tracks the entire supply chain of certified wood, paper and bamboo product to ensure it has been responsibly sourced. EcoRoll is made from 100% (FSC®) certified bamboo. It's also smooth, lint-free and naturally hypoallergenic. And delivered in plastic-free packaging. Our boxes are also certified and we use paper tape.
Trees are a critical part of our ecosystem, give us oxygen, and serve as natural systems of carbon sequestration that act to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide to reduce global climate change. Last year, in a historic move to protect more than 85% of the world's remaining forests, leaders of over 100 countries pledged to end deforestation by 2030. It's a welcome effort—with parts of the Amazon now teetering past the tipping point. However, some critics argued it wasn't ambitious enough, in part because the pledge isn't binding, and 2030 is almost a decade away. That said, the landmark agreement reflects a growing recognition of nature's role in helping to address global warming rather than placing our hopes in tech that essentially doesn't exist yet.
Another pledge was to cut methane emissions by 30% by 2030. The most recent IPCC report declared methane a top priority for mitigating climate change. Its main drivers are animal agriculture, fossil fuels, and landfills. Over 100 countries signed on board for this pledge—which is fantastic, except that the three top methane-emitting countries did not: China, Russia, and India. And similar to the deforestation pledge, this one is non-binding, meaning that there is little to no consequence should any country fail to meet the outlined commitments.
Committed to doing better business
EcoRoll was our response to an industry that required radical change. There has been little incentive for innovation and sustainable initiatives, not at the governmental policy level, so corporations continue to do what provides them with the most profits. According to the World Wildlife Foundation, globally, 270,000 trees are flushed down the toilet and dumped in landfills daily. Toilet paper and tissues—are single-use products. So after years of research and development, we have toilet paper not made from trees, and we are proud to be the first and only toilet paper brand that is a Toitū Climate Positive certified organisation.
Changing our worldview to enact global change
Published earlier this year, Kantar's Better Futures revealed that despite a challenging context, 43% of Kiwis were committed to living a sustainable lifestyle—partly driven by increased awareness of the issues of plastic pollution. If we are to change the world, we have to change our view—particularly the one that taught generations to see the Earth as something to be used. So a huge thank you to all of you reading this, to those who made the switch to bamboo.
Because toilet paper has always been made from trees, it does not mean it needs to be now or in the future. Increasingly with public pressure, as more brands switch to bamboo and recycled paper content, we are reducing our reliance on trees. And when we are utilising materials and resources from our forests that we should demand from organisations transparency and responsibility. When buying paper products, whether that paper product is from a tree or Non-Timber Forest Products such as bamboo—look for the FSC® logo.
